Why Doesn’t My Adjustment Hold Forever?

Why Doesn't My Adjustment Hold Forever? by Elmira Family Chiropractic

Understanding how everyday stress affects your body and your chiropractic care

Have you ever wondered why some people can go weeks between chiropractic adjustments while others need to be checked more frequently? Or why you might hold your adjustment beautifully for several weeks, only to find that suddenly you’re not holding as well?

The answer often comes down to one thing: how well your body is adapting to the stress in your life.

Your Body Is Constantly Adapting

Every single day, your body is responding to the demands placed on it. Some of those demands are obvious, while others happen quietly in the background.

We often talk about three main types of stress:

  • Physical stress: Poor posture, repetitive movements, injuries, long hours sitting, heavy lifting, lack of sleep, or even an unusually intense workout.
  • Chemical stress: Poor nutrition, dehydration, environmental toxins, alcohol, medications, or exposure to chemicals in our everyday environment.
  • Emotional stress: Work pressures, financial concerns, relationship challenges, grief, anxiety, or simply the busyness of everyday life.

Your nervous system is constantly working to help you respond and adapt to these different stressors.

And here’s something important to remember: not all stress is bad! Exercise, learning something new, and exciting life changes can all create stress. What matters is how much stress your body is managing and whether it has the resources to recover.

Why Do Some People Hold Longer Than Others?

No two people live the same life, and no two nervous systems respond to stress in exactly the same way.

Someone who is sleeping well, eating nutritious food, moving regularly, and managing their emotional stress may find that they can go longer between adjustments.

Meanwhile, someone going through a particularly stressful season, recovering from an injury, or experiencing significant physical demands may need to be checked more frequently.

Even within the same person, this can change throughout the year!

You may notice that you hold your adjustments longer during a relaxing vacation but need more frequent care during a busy work season, a difficult family situation, when you are processing a virus or during a period of poor sleep.

This doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong. It simply reminds us that our bodies are constantly changing and adapting.

Think About Brushing Your Teeth

Here’s an analogy we love.

You brush your teeth every day. You floss, make healthy food choices, and do your best to care for your mouth.

But does that mean you’ll never need to visit the dentist again?

Of course not!

Your daily habits help maintain your oral health, but regular dental checkups still have a role to play.

We can think about chiropractic care in a similar way.

The things you do between adjustments matter tremendously. Good sleep, movement, nutrition, hydration, and stress management all support your overall health.

But taking great care of yourself doesn’t mean your spine will never experience problems or that you’ll never need another chiropractic check up and adjustment.

The Goal Isn’t to Hold Forever

One of the things we love seeing in our office is when someone begins to hold their adjustments longer.

It can be encouraging when fewer adjustments are needed over time. However, there isn’t one perfect amount of time that everyone should hold, and longer isn’t automatically better in every situation.

Our goal isn’t to adjust you as often as possible. It’s to check you carefully, adjust when indicated, and help you build a body that is as adaptable and as resilient as possible.

So whether you’re holding for a few days, a few weeks, or longer, remember that your care should be based on what your body needs, not simply what the calendar says.

Your body is constantly adapting to life. Our job is to help you stay connected along the way!
