Pediatric Care at Elmira Family Chiropractic

Why do kids go to the chiropractor?

Well to start, kids have spines too. Also, did you know that the brain and nervous system are some of the first systems to develop in utero? At week 6, the neural tube closes and becomes the brain and spinal cord. The nervous system (which travels through the spinal cord) is the master control system of the body that controls all function including respiration, digestion, elimination, growth, motor control and so much more.

One of our goals, as a Chiropractor is to maximize the expression of your child’s nervous system, from birth onwards, to allow their biological intelligence, to be fully expressed throughout life.

The birth process can be difficult not only for mom, but baby as well, and can be a factor in creating subluxation patterns in infants. This may show up with your baby holding their head to the side (torticollis), flat spots on the skull (plagiocephaly), difficulty nursing, irritability, poor motor control, delayed development, and the list goes on. However, many infants and children may be subluxated and show no symptoms at all. This sets the stage for possible future issues if not addressed.

We often get asked when is the best time to bring my child to the Chiropractor? As soon as possible. The adjustments are safe, low force and very effective.

Both Dr. Sarah and Dr. Thom have completed over 200+ additional hours in the care of pregnant women and children. They have both completed their Certification by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics (CACCP) with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Also, they have trained in DNS pediatrics, PIPS technique and other intraoral techniques.
