Why New Year's Resolutions Fail and What to do About it by Elmira Family Chiropractic

January, much revered as long, dark and cold. The month when many people set resolutions, start a fresh and watch new TV series. It is also a month where many people suffer from sadness in the wake of the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas.

Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. ~Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

Here at EFC, we want you to live an extraordinary life. However, there is nothing we can do to fix what is wrong with you, we can only help turn on the light and remove you from the darkness.  This is what we are doing every time we make an adjustment in the office, we are turning on the power in the nervous system and it is what we intend to do with this newsletter.

How badly did you break your New Year’s resolutions last year? Do people even set resolutions any more because few actually follow through…

New years resolutions are meant to fail. The definition is ‘a firm decision to do or not do something.’ As soon as we don’t go to the gym the 3rd week in January we have broken our resolution and we lose all hope. Instead of resolutions, we should be setting goals because they are more achievable. Goals are meant to be difficult to attain, but if they aren’t achieved we can learn from our mistakes.

A recent article in Success Magazine titled, ‘13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do,’ Psychotherapist Amy Morin describes the mental trap doors that can hold us back from overcoming adversity, achieving our goals and living the life we dream. They are summarized here:

1) Waste time feeling sorry for themselves
2) Give away their power
3) Shy away from change
4) Squander energy on things they can’t control
5) Worry about pleasing everyone
6) Fear taking risks
7) Dwell on the past
8) Repeat their mistakes
9) Resent other people’s successes
10) Give up after the first failure
11) Fear ‘alone time’
12) Feel the world owes them something
13) Expect immediate results

Do any of these behaviours sound like you? If so, put the behaviour on your stop doing list. I contend that by improving your mental strength your new goals will be achieved as a natural progression of better self control. Happy New Years!
