Can a Chiropractic Adjustment Promote Weight Loss?

Can a Chiropractic Adjustment Promote Weight Loss? by Elmira Family Chiropractic

If you are like me and can’t say no to good holiday food or any food for that matter, then perhaps you are feeling a little heavier and more sluggish then usual. Many don’t know that the benefits of chiropractic adjustments go far beyond simply alleviating back and neck pain. Research, medical science and 120 years of clinical results show that proper alignment of the spine leads to significant health results, one of which being the balancing of stress hormones which play a huge role in our ability to lose weight.

Hormones serve as chemical messengers that secrete directly into the blood which are then carried to organs and tissues to help direct function. A study published in 2011 explained that a chiropractic adjustment of the cervical spine (the neck) increased the brain’s utilization of glucose (sugar), decreased specific stress hormones throughout the body and reduced muscle tone. These measurements are major indicators in a reduction of stress hormones by inhibiting the tone of the central nervous system. Any procedure that influences hormones will powerfully and directly influence all bodily functions.

Research published in 2009 from John Hopkins University showed the there are many chronic conditions linked to an increase in stress hormones, particularly noradrenaline. The list includes: cancer, bipolar disorder, excessive body weight, hypertension, type 1 and 2 diabetes, glaucoma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and immune system function. One of the more notable symptoms of high levels of noradrenaline is excessive weight gain. Many patients no matter what their gender have experienced some form of weight loss after starting chiropractic care as balance returns to their nervous system and in turn their hormones.

So if you are worried about your weight make sure to eat good food and exercise, but do not forget to have your spine checked for stress because that could be preventing you from losing those extra pounds.
